TONTO VERDE
Dual Excitement in a Secluded Setting: Tonto Verde Golf Course
Peaks Course: Par 72: Yardage: 4,791-6,737
Ranch Course: Par 72: Yardage: 5,287-6,988
Gary Panks designed both courses at Tonto Verde Golf Course 6 years apart, and they complement each other beautifully. The Peaks is short and sweet, and all about the views. The Ranch, the newest entry, is longer and stronger, as the low-handicap player will have his hands full.
Of the two, the Peaks is the more popular, possibly because it's prettier due to some incredible surroundings. They include such landmarks as the Four Peaks, the Verde River Valley, the McDowell Mountains and Weaver's Needle (it's the massive monolith that rises in the distance while playing the signature fifth hole).
The ranch rivals Arizona's most demanding 18 holes, as all four par-5s top 500 yards and counting. Still, there's a lost of risk-reward, which is the only route to a good score. Panks gives the player a great opportunity at the short par-4 14th, but the final four go 202,430,531,and437 yards.
Steve Nicodemus' Tip: Both courses at Tonto Verde Golf Course have great views and designs, but of the two, I prefer the Peaks. The Peaks is more spectacular, probably more playable for the average guy, and always in great shape. The one comment I often hear is that people love the way it's secluded. Even though Tonto Verde Golf Course is private, it's open to the public on a limited basis--- ay least for now! And is available through Resort Suites. |
