Excitement at Every Turn: Sunridge Canyon Golf Course
Par 71:
Yardage: 4,689-6,823
It seems so easy, and then it seems so difficult. Welcome to SunRidge Canyon Golf Course, where architect Keith Foster set the standard for the desert-mountain golf experience in Arizona.
Carved out for a rugged canyon on the eastern slopes of the McDowell Mountains, the front line at SunRidge Canyon is a pleasant plunge down the hill with nary a dull moment. Gear up for the back nine, as a player will have to work hard over the last six holes to equal par. That's because the back side plays straight up hill --- out of Fountain Hill's most notorious canyon.
The best part of SunRidge Canyon Golf Course is there is never a let-up, especially when it comes to the abundant variety of holes. Stay focused, the surrounding vistas, lakes and fountains make for some eye-popping golf. That includes the par-3 17th hole, where two distinct tee boxes allow a player to select a shot from 150 to 210 yards.
Steve Nicodemus' Tip: Get your birdies early, because coming up the hill on the back nine you'll give a lot of them back. In every way, SunRidge Canyon Golf Course is the true definition of high Sonoran desert golf; Spectacular elevation changes combined with panoramic views. They've also got some great new greens. |
